Astorius Team

Our partners combine many years of experience in the Private Equity industry with different perspectives. Thomas Weinmann was a partner in a well-known Private Equity fund for many years. From this operational position, he was able to acquire extensive experience with respect to managing Private Equity investments and teams. Georg Remshagen held managerial positions in the areas of corporate and equity analysis at leading banks in Germany. These skills are a decisive factor for quality within Astorius’ transaction-based fund analysis work. Frank Rohwedder structured a range of closed funds of different asset classes for various client groups at two large banks. With this experience, he is able to guarantee that Astorius Capital fund products are structured solidly and in compliance with regulatory standards. For his part, Julien Zornig arranged and guided the selection of fund managers in the alternative segment for two renowned private banks.

His important experience includes designing a correspondingly institutional selection process, subsequently managing client assets, and providing support to family offices and institutions.

Each partner worked successfully for many years at large and well-known financial service providers. They share a desire to bring their extensive knowledge and experience to bear at Astorius and the goal of positioning Astorius as a high-quality provider for investors in Private Equity umbrella funds.

For many years, Astorius has provided an opportunity for career starters, master students, interns, or working students to acquire practical experience in the Private Equity industry.

Companies offer above-average return potential outside of regulated exchanges. Astorius captures this potential with high-quality solutions for private and institutional investors.

Georg Remshagen

Georg Remshagen has more than 20 years of experience in analyzing and evaluating small and medium-sized companies that are publicly listed and unlisted. The focus of his work as an equity analyst was detailed analyses of industries, individual companies, and their competitors. Based on the experience he has acquired, Mr. Remshagen has advised institutional fund managers in Europe and in the USA with regard to their investment decisions.

Along the way, Georg Remshagen has analyzed and evaluated more than 40 companies in various industries. In addition to his daily analytical work, he participated in a number of public offerings, such as Brenntag, Delticom, Homag, or Ströer.

The teams he managed almost all achieved top 3 placements for German mid & small caps, even leading the rankings from 2012-2014.

The investment success of our target funds is significantly influenced by the careful selection of companies and making the correct decision for Private Equity managers. Astorius’ approach is to identify managers who generate above-average value.

I have always observed with concern how little the sale of closed funds is associated with market and product analysis. I am convinced, however, that it is essential for the success of an investment to meaningfully represent the respective market mechanisms into the structure. This is where Astorius Capital and its Private Equity experience comes in.

Frank Rohwedder

Frank Rohwedder has been active in the area of closed funds for two notable banking institutes since 1998. Most recently, he held the Director position for the Intellectual Property division at Deutsche Bank, which he set up and which was unique to the market.

Frank Rohwedder has more than 20 years of experience in structuring, placing, servicing, and liquidating closed funds. As part of this work, his focus was on the asset classes of Private Equity, intellectual property rights (patent rights in particular), and media. The equity volume of the fund he structured amounted to around €700 million.

Because of his broad asset and structuring experience, Frank Rohwedder's expertise is in high demand, bringing him to numerous events as a speaker.

With structuring, I was always interested in the whole, whether in consulting, marketing, or analysis all the way to university work via lectures and specialist publications. Astorius follows exactly this approach for its investors. There is no silo mentality in individual departments; everyone is a point of contact for all aspects concerning Private Equity investment.
(Frank Rohwedder)

Career Stages

Frank Rohwedder studied economics in Kiel and Paris. After completing his training at Hamburg’s Vereins- und Westbank (Unicredit today), he became a member of a 15-person team in 1999 that successfully established itself as a spin-off initiator of closed funds on the German market under the name Blue Capital GmbH. Here Frank Rohwedder learned the economic, tax, and legal craft of structuring. The team structured and serviced asset classes like Private Equity funds, German wine funds, security portfolio funds, and operative media funds. In addition to handling the various structuring requirements that resulted from this, the team successfully developed and placed mutual funds as well as private placements on the market.

In 2005 Frank Rohwedder transitioned to investment banking at Deutsche Bank in Frankfurt. In the Asset Finance department, he was responsible for developing new markets and asset classes. In 2006 he was tasked with setting up a team for the new intellectual property asset class, which was created for him, for patent-based financing of research and development projects. He held this position until co-founding Astorius Capital. Furthermore, he was a cross-team point of contact for international structures and financing new asset classes.

In addition to his work, Frank Rohwedder has taught economics for many years as a lecturer at today’s Hamburg School of Business Administration. He also represented Deutsche Bank on the Board of Trustees of the European Business School (EBS) in Wiesbaden and served on an advisory board on innovation financing for the German Federal Chancellery.

Oskar Volkland

Oskar Volkland has more than 15 years of experience in wealth management and advisory for private investors. As a former investment banker, single family officer and fund manager he combines diverse perspectives into a wholistic understanding of the specific needs and challenges of this investor group.

In particular, his long-term trusted exchange with a select group of about 350 global family office investors enabled him to get deep insights into the wide range of individual strategies that sophisticated investors follow to invest in both liquid and alternative markets.

The most successful private investors that I have known in the private equity space were highly realistic about their own capabilities and resources and knew when to engage experts like Astorius to complement them. (Oskar Volkland)

Career Stages

Oskar Volkland graduated from Maastricht University in 2008 with a Master’s degree in Econometrics before starting his professional development in Private Wealth Management at Goldman Sachs in Frankfurt. His main responsibilities as a Financial Analyst were the implementation and management of client portfolios across the entire spectrum of liquid asset classes as well as select alternative strategies. Following an extensive in-house continuing education program that is unique in the wealth management industry he was assigned responsibility of client relationships with ultra-high net worth families in Germany and Austria.

Oskar Volkland then set up a Single Family Office structure in Switzerland for one of Germany’s most successful early internet entrepreneurs, building on his experience in the wholistic investment and steering of a significant pool of family capital. The direct investment and venture capital activities of the family office lead to the idea and foundation of ASK THE CIRCLE, which Oskar Volkland as one of the co-founders spent seven years growing into the leading international deal-sharing network for family office investors. This activity allowed him to establish relationships with investors on all continents.

One such relationship with a real estate investment boutique in Austria lead to the opportunity in 2017 to contribute as the partner responsible for investor relations to the setup of an opportunistic real estate fund for three renown German entrepreneurial families. This role allowed Oskar Volkland to get additional valuable experience in working with sophisticated private investors as well as in managing investment funds before joining Astorius in April of 2019.

Over the years, I have participated in many discussions on due diligence with existing and potential fund investors. Sometimes these discussions were challenging, sometimes not. Which is exactly why it became more and more clear to me that the quality of a fund manager’s due diligence is the most important factor in a fund achieving above-average performance.

Thomas C. Weinmann

Thomas Weinmann has worked for over 20 years in the Private Equity segment. He first spent more than two years in LBO financing at the former German market leader Dresdner Kleinwort Benson. Thomas Weinmann can also look back to almost 13 successful years, nine of which as a partner, at BC Partners. At the end of 2012, he founded Astorius Capital with the goal of making Private Equity accessible to investors. He also provides the experience he gathered in this capacity to family-owned companies as an advisor. Mr. Weinmann also acts as an advisor to an established Private Equity fund. In addition to his work in operations, from 2011 to 2015 he was the Honorary Director at the German Association of Private Equity and Venture Capital.

As an investment manager, Mr. Weinmann has invested a total of €2.2 billion in equity capital in five companies for the funds BC Partners consults, which he then manages while carrying out company sales and initial public offerings. He also supported the successful structuring and placement of three BC Partners funds as an investment manager.

This experience means that Mr. Weinmann knows the Private Equity world as an insider. He possesses detailed knowledge of processes, control mechanisms, and interpersonal success factors. On this basis, he is exceptionally capable of assessing the quality of the investment managers in the Due Diligence fund, which he largely implemented.

Good Private Equity investment managers are recognized not by how many transactions they have conducted, but in the capital gains that they generate for their investors. (Thomas C. Weinmann)

Career Stages

After training at a Sparkasse bank in Southern Germany, Thomas Weinmann completed his studies in business administration at the University of Passau in 1997. Following this, he began his professional career at the Leveraged Finance division of Dresdner Kleinwort Benson. During this time he also structured the public to private transition of Friedrich Grohe AG in 1999 via the funds advised by BC Partners, in addition to financing corporate acquisitions by financial investors in the mid cap segment. After completing the structuring for this financing, Mr. Weinmann moved from Dresdner Kleinwort Benson to BC Partners.

As part of his work as an investment manager at BC Partners, Thomas Weinmann was responsible for all necessary due diligence activities, financing and structuring with regard to taxation for company acquisitions, and negotiating purchase agreements and management participation programs. His analyses of target companies spanned industries and he conducted them with a global focus.

Following the due diligence phase, Thomas Weinmann managed the companies purchased by BC Fonds until their respective sale. Here, he regularly devoted himself to implementing the operative business plans, financing situations, support for additional acquisitions, and sales or public offerings of the respective investments.

Of particular note are the capital market transactions for which he was responsible in the form of the high yield bond placement of Grohe and Sanitec, and the successful initial public offering of Lecico (Cairo/London) and Brenntag (Frankfurt). Many of Mr. Weinmann's investments represented the largest market transactions of their time and were regularly characterized by innovative transaction structures. With Grohe and Brenntag, he played a significant role in two of the most successful investments of the BC Partners funds. Mr. Weinmann also advises notable family-owned businesses.

From 2011 to 2015, Mr. Weinmann was an honorary member of the board of the German Private Equity and Venture Capital Association (BVK) as a speaker on the large buyouts segment. The BVK represents the interests of companies involved in Private Equity and venture capital in Germany.
